The Proof: Thought Leadership
That time I created a social movement by turning the entire team into a content machine, organically generating nearly 300k LinkedIn impressions.
The One Where I Created Thought Leaders
The problem: There was little brand recognition in the industry… and even less budget to do anything about it.
The remedy: Create an employee advocacy program focused on thought leadership content where employees become a content machine by paying them to post on LinkedIn.
The result: 293,000 organic impressions, 1,912% growth in campaign reach, and measurable lifts in website traffic and engagement.
The details: The company needed to build awareness in a niche industry, but there wasn’t enough budget available to make a meaningful impact through traditional paid marketing. So instead of paying for ads, I decided to pay my coworkers.
I created a 12-week employee-generated content campaign designed to turn engineers, developers, and internal team members into brand advocates on LinkedIn. The concept was simple: post consistently about your work, industry insights, and company initiatives and earn cash for doing it. The goal was to create an army of industry thought leaders who were working towards building their own personal brands while elevating the company's brand awareness.
The strategy shifted brand awareness away from a single corporate account and into the hands of the people actually building the product. Instead of relying on paid distribution, I leveraged employee voices to expand reach organically through their own networks.
Over the course of the campaign, participating employees collectively generated more than 293,000 impressions, increasing campaign reach by 1,912% from baseline metrics and driving a 33.6% increase in company page visits on LinkedIn.
The impact extended well beyond the platform itself, resulting in a 21% increase in organic social website traffic, a 38% increase in engaged sessions from social traffic, and a 242% increase in time spent on site from organic social visitors.
More importantly, the campaign proved that brand awareness doesn’t always require bigger budgets. Sometimes the strongest marketing channel is the team sitting a few desks away (or a few states away, in my remote case)… especially when you pay them.
The impact I didn’t see coming? When one of my co-workers received a text that simply stated, “Your LinkedIn content is gold.”
